New COBALT High-Performance Embedded Computer
Reduces Size Weight and Power (SWaP)
While Cutting Cost by Up to 50 Percent
San Diego, Calif. - 09 February, 2010 – AP Labs is pleased to announce availability of the new COBALT (Computer Brick Alternative) high-performance embedded computer that can minimize Size Weight and Power (SWaP) while reducing costs by as much as fifty percent when compared to backplane-based systems with equivalent performance.
The fully-enclosed, ruggedized COBALT design offers a small form factor measuring only 6.5 x 9.725 x 2.95 inches and weighs less than 5.5 pounds. Total power usage is between 5W and 25W, depending on processor selection. The unit can be configured for either 28VDC or 115VAC input power to provide compatibility with airborne, ground vehicle or shipboard requirements. The efficient thermal design supports fanless operation in a wide range of severe environments.
COBALT embedded systems offer a high degree of scalability and flexibility, with a variety of processors from either Intel Core2Duo or Atom families, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, solid state storage options (fixed or removable), dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a range of standards-based interfaces (USB, RS-232/422, ARINC429, MIL-STD-1553, GPS and GPIO). COBALT systems are configurable with Linux or Windows operating systems and can be tested to assure conformance with program-specific software.
The COBALT system’s self-contained, no-backplane design reduces complexity and improves reliability while also providing equivalent performance at as little as half the cost of VME or cPCI backplane based systems. This makes COBALT an ideal option for embedded applications where space, weight, power and performance all are critical, such as mission computing, C4I, or UAV payload interface/control systems.
